The Our Ecopolis mural was created in September 2017 as a collaboration between the CAR and the Northwest Indiana Beyond Coal Campaign, with dozens of students participating. Youth participated at Steel City Academy, Progressive Community Church in Gary, First Presbyterian Church and Krueger Middle School in Michigan City, and Kankakee Valley High School. The mural is inspired by ideas for regenerative city generated in the “South Shore Ecopolis” production by Jeff Biggers, envisioning a world that is resilient to climate change. The mural features the Emerson center for self reliance in The old Emerson high school, Schahfer a super polluting coal fire power plant turned into a bird sanctuary, the Michigan City coal fire power plant turned into a fish farm along Lake Michigan, solar panels on schools, community orchards and more.
